2023-2024 Horizons Bible Study
"Sacred Encounters"
Olive Mahabir, Author/Wilma Angelica Quinonez Cubero, Leader's Author
Have you ever had a sacred encounter? Would you recognize one? Within the pages of this study, author Olive Mahabir invites you to consider Jesus and Jesus’ disciples who shared the Good News through sacred encounters with everyday people.
The Gospel According to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, or Luke-Acts, “one story in two parts demonstrates the unfolding of God’s redemptive purposes in human history and presents a distinctive perspective on the person and work of Jesus Christ.” When you complete this study, you’ll have covered 25% of the New Testament! Written by Luke, a physician and traveling companion of Paul, the message is radical, inclusive, and hope filled.
Further, this message invites the church to a deeper, compassionate engagement with the world. “What are the potential implications for the church if we treat our interactions as sacred encounters that demonstrate the transformative love of Christ Jesus?” This year’s study is about the power and presence of Jesus Christ as written in Luke-Acts.
Luke's purpose for writing his Gospel (see Luke 1:3–4) is to give an “orderly” account of the early church after Christ's resurrection. Acts is a historical account of how the resurrection of Jesus changes everything through the birth of the early church.
Luke shows Jesus—fully God and fully human—moving among the people with compassion to free them from the myriad of things oppressing them. The disregarded, the outcast, the forgotten, and the marginalized all get to see and experience the love of Christ—even if Jesus had to confront the Jewish leaders to do it.
Get ready to be challenged, to build more compassion and inclusive communities where people have a sense of belonging. Jesus accepts and loves you just as you are so you will have a Sacred Encounter.
Welcome to PW
Presbyterian Women (PW) offers women in the church meaningful ways to live out their faith in the midst of a caring community of women. For more than 200 years PW groups have strengthened the Presbyterian Church and played a major role in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and witnessing to the promise of God’s kingdom. We are an inclusive, caring community of women rooted in faith and join together regularly for prayer, study, service and fellowship. You are invited to participate in this wonderful ministry at New Braunfels Presbyterian Church.
PW Small Groups
Small groups are the heart of PW. Several options exist for you to walk with sisters in Christ. Every group is open to all and welcomes you.
Esther and Mary Circles study God’s word this year with Sacred Encounters by Olive Mahabir, Author/Wilma Angelica Quinonez Cubero, Leader's Author. Bible studies begin in September and meet monthly at the church.
Dorcas Circle is a service group that has a full year of exciting projects planned. These hard working women cook, knit, sew, glue, package, assemble, and support one another as they offer support for our congregation and neighbors. Check out the calendar for a description of their monthly activities.
Un-Circles — Is there something else you would like to do? Have you been a part of an exciting ministry elsewhere you would like to launch at NBPC? PW is here to help nurture all women grow in Christ. We would love to hear your ideas!
PW Gatherings
Events throughout the year are open to those who participate in small groups AND those who come when they can.
PW hosts an annual Fall Celebration and a Springtime PW Birthday Party where we enjoy programs, speakers, fellowship, good food, and join together in mission outreach offerings.
Our PW participates in the annual Fall Cluster where we renew friendships with our PW sisters within the San Antonio area of Mission Presbytery. Women also attend the annual Mission Presbytery Spring Gathering and Women’s Conferences at Mo Ranch.
